Tirzepatide and Semaglutide - A Weight Loss Medication Deep Dive

It’s no secret that weight is a prevalent topic of discussion in our society, especially in the age of social media. But weight is not just an aesthetic concern – it’s also directly related to one’s health and wellness. The majority of people in the United States struggle with their weight. As many as 40% of adults in this country are obese, and over 70% are overweight. This is not an accident, and certainly not a personal moral failing- modern life often makes it insurmountably difficult to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Our food is ultra processed, our jobs are exhausting and largely stationary, and stress is a big part of everyday life. That being said, being overweight can significantly increase your risks of developing other health complications, such as heart problems and diabetes, so it is something that should be addressed. Traditional weight loss methods like exercising and making lifestyle changes are an important first step, but if you’ve tried everything but are still not seeing the results you desire, it might be time to consider some additional help.

What is Weight Loss Medication?

Weight loss drugs are controlled substances that are used to help individuals lose weight. They are very effective for weight management when used in tandem with a healthy diet and exercise, and must be prescribed by a licensed medical practitioner. Your practitioner will take into account your previous medical history to determine if they will be safe and beneficial.

How Does Weight Loss Medication Work?

The weight loss drugs Tirzepatide (Mounjaro, Zepbound) and Semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy, Rybelsus) are part of a class of drugs known as incretin mimetics. While not identical in the way they work, they both mimic the naturally occurring GLP-1 hormone to increase insulin secretion and reduce appetite, among other things. Both of them stimulate insulin release from the pancreas, suppress glucagon secretion, and delay gastric emptying. Their overall purpose is to control blood sugar levels, help you feel fuller for longer, and decrease your appetite. These drugs are also used to treat other conditions such as type 2 diabetes and sleep apnea.

Tirzepatide vs. Semaglutide

Tirzepatide and Semaglutide belong to the same class of drugs but they target different receptors and hormones to achieve the same goal.

Semaglutide (Ozempic) mimics the naturally occurring hormone glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and binds to the GLP-1 receptors to regulate blood sugar and slow gastric emptying. This medication comes in the form of an oral tablet or an injection.

Tirzepatide (Mounjaro) mimics two naturally occurring hormones, GLP-1 and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP), and targets both receptors to improve glycemic control and reduce appetite. This medication only comes in the form of an injection but may prove to be the more effective of the two based on recent analysis.

Both medications can have side effects relating to nausea and gastrointestinal discomfort. Neither medication should be taken alongside other similar drugs that target GLP-1 and GIP receptors.

Our Bodies on Weight Loss Medication

When we eat, our bodies produce the hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) which prompts the pancreas to produce more insulin. In individuals with weight loss issues, it’s possible there is a dysregulation in the production of this hormone, which affects insulin and glucose levels, thus disrupting multiple functions of the body. Many seemingly unrelated issues can arise if there are any hormonal imbalances in our bodies.

Tirzepatide and Semaglutide weight loss medications are ultimately a form of Hormonal Therapy. Mimicking certain hormones like GLP-1 and GIP and targeting those receptors is a way to try and address a certain deficiency that leads to increased cravings and never feeling satiated. In individuals with diabetic predispositions, these drugs also regulate blood sugar and blood pressure.
